Animal Welfare

Barilla is pleased to announce the next milestone in its Good for you Good for the Planet commitments, as the company expands its animal welfare commitments to include higher standards for the raising of broiler chickens.,. Specifically, Barilla will work with its chicken suppliers to:
1-      Transition to strains of birds approved by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) or Global Animal Partnership (GAP) based on measurably improved welfare outcomes.
2-      Reduce stocking density to a maximum of 6 pounds per square foot and prohibit broiler cages.
3-      Provide birds with enriched environments, including litter, lighting, and enrichment that meets GAP’s new standards.
4-      Process chickens in a manner that avoids pre-stun handling and instead utilizes a multi-step controlled atmosphere processing system that induces an irreversible stun.
5-      Demonstrate compliance with the above standards via third-party auditing system.
Barilla is aiming for 100 percent compliance to this policy by 2024, As the first pasta maker to join the movement toward cage-free eggs in 2012, Barilla has committed to a completely cage-free egg supply by 2020.
