Barilla Group to take center stage at G7 and celebrate Italian Food Culture by presenting its Emergency Mobile Kitchen & hosting a lunch for the Delegations
19 September 2024
As the world turns its attention to the G7 Agriculture and Fisheries Summit, set for September 27-29 in Siracusa, Italy, Barilla will be a key player in promoting solidarity and Italian culinary traditions. For the first time, Barilla’s Mobile Emergency Kitchen will be present on an international stage, providing a powerful symbol of the company’s dedication to both humanitarian aid and the celebration of food culture.
The Mobile Emergency Kitchen, comprised of seven vehicles and a trailer for gluten-free cooking, has been a Barilla initiative since 2014 in collaboration with Parma’s Civil Protection Agency. It can be deployed in just four hours and is capable of serving over 500 hot meals per hour to support communities in crisis and the volunteers assisting them. The mobile kitchen has been activated following numerous natural disasters across Italy, reinforcing Barilla Group’s commitment to providing aid to those in need.
At the summit, this mobile kitchen will be supported by over 30 volunteers from Barilla and Parma’s Civil Protection Agency and will offer Pasta Parties from September 25th to 27th to the visitors of the Divinazione EXPO area, who can experience one of Italy’s most iconic dishes—pasta. The recipes are created with Barilla’s pasta, sauces, and pestos that were prepared under the supervision of Academia Barilla’s Chef Marcello Zaccaria and will be distributed by the volunteers.
“We thank the Ministry of Agriculture for involving us in the G7 Summit, a unique opportunity to discuss crucial global issues affecting the agricultural sector. Barilla will contribute with its Chef and Emergency Mobile Kitchen to celebrate pasta, a symbol of Italian gastronomy, while also showcasing our commitment to the communities we serve and to sustainable agriculture,” commented the Barilla Group.
Barilla will also be part of the official G7 program, with a special lunch on September 27th dedicated to the ministerial delegations with the involvement of more than 180 high-level officials from across the globe. Chef Marcello Zaccaria will cook two signature dishes, showcasing Barilla Al Bronzo pasta alongside ingredients inspired by Italy’s diverse regional flavors.
“The recipes presented were specifically created with reference to the ingredients of the territory, from Emilia Romagna to Sicily, so as to create a harmony on the plate: alongside Barilla Al Bronzo pasta, the flavors of hazelnuts, citrus, datterino tomatoes and basil all come to life. At the core, the intention is to maximize the Mediterranean essence of the products and their regions,” said Chef Zaccaria.
For Barilla, supporting sustainable agricultural practices throughout the production chain is essential to delivering delicious, high-quality food inspired by a healthy lifestyle and the Mediterranean Diet, while respecting the environment and communities. Over the years, the company has adopted four guidelines for sustainable cultivation of its key ingredients. These include the "Carta del Mulino,": a set of 10 rules designed to ensure higher product quality, support farmers' communities, and minimize environmental impact, the "Carta del Basilico," which covers 100% of Barilla's basil purchases for its pesto and sauces and is based on sourcing basil from sustainable agriculture, protecting biodiversity, and supporting farming communities, and the new "Carta della Nocciola," an innovative sustainable agriculture guideline created with the University of Tuscia for hazelnut production. All initiatives emphasize traceability, good agricultural practices, and biodiversity throughout the supply chain. The company also continues to engage in solidarity efforts supporting its communities in the various countries in which it operates, a constant commitment which has seen Barilla donate over 60 million euros and almost 50 thousand tons of products since 2010.
