Our durum wheat selection
Being the world’s largest pasta producer comes with great responsibility. For 148 years, we have embraced this responsibility by carefully selecting only the finest durum wheat from around the world.
We have always sourced the best grains wherever they grow, while purchasing as close as possible to our production sites to ensure sustainability and to support local agricultural communities.
In all the geographies where we produce our pasta, we work hand in hand with local farmers to strengthen the value chain in terms of quality, and economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Through the Barilla Sustainable Farming Programme, we promote responsible agricultural practices in collaboration with research centers and universities, fostering innovation and continuous improvement in wheat cultivation.
Quality lies at the core of every choice we make. Each year, we carry out 75,000 analyses on durum wheat and more than 200,000 checks on our pasta to ensure the highest standards of safety and traceability, from the field to the shelf. All the durum wheat we purchase - regardless of its origin - undergoes rigorous selection and testing conducted by our laboratories, independent institutions, and regulatory bodies. These controls ensure full compliance with our quality parameters and food safety standards, guaranteeing that every plate of pasta meets our consumers’ expectations.
Italy remains at the heart of our sourcing strategy. On average, we purchase around 500,000 tons of Italian wheat each year, 350,000 of which come through supply chain contracts that connect us directly with farmers. These long-term partnerships allow us to promote responsible agricultural practices, enhance product consistency, and support the vitality of rural communities.
Our pasta is the result of a timeless commitment to excellence. From the careful selection of raw materials to the precision of our milling and production processes, every detail contributes to creating pasta with a perfect texture, color, and taste.
A combination of tradition, innovation, and passion that ensures our pasta is always “al dente”, always authentic, and always crafted to bring people together around the joy of good food.
