Being the largest pasta producer is a strong responsibility: that is why we select only the best quality durum wheat in the world, cultivated in the most sustainable way, consistent with our mission “Good for You, Good for the Planet”. In 2016, we purchased 1,167,000 tons of durum wheat globally. Approximately 70% comes from local suppliers who are close to where we produce our pasta (Italy, US, Greece, Turkey and Russia). In Italy, we purchased 732,000 tons of durum wheat both through cultivation contracts signed with Italian farmers, which account for about 54% of the durum wheat purchased in Italy, and through contracts drawn up to cover specific needs.
AMERICAN CONTROL OF BARILLA LASTS LESS THAN 10 YEARS
Barilla is an Italian company with its headquarters in Parma, where it was founded in 1877. The history of the company is the history of the Barilla family, at the head of the Group for four generations, today with the brothers Guido, Luca and Paolo. In 1971, for family reasons and linked to the historical and social period, the brothers Pietro and Gianni Barilla decided to sell the company to the American multinational WR GRACE. Barilla was managed by the Grace company until 1979. From the time of the sale and for the following 8 years, Pietro Barilla’s fixed idea was how to buy back the company. In 1979, creating a special case history in the world of business, Pietro Barilla succeeded in buying back the company, which since then has always remained in the hands of the Italian family.
A PRACTICAL DECISION, NOT AN IDEOLOGICAL ONE
When it comes to using genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) in the agricultural and food industry, people are still concerned about the possible risks involved with this type of application, and are wondering just what sort of real opportunities do actually exist.
Barilla has therefore decided to play it safe and refrain from the use of genetically modified ingredients, guaranteeing not to use GMO ingredients for all its products. This choice, which stems from our manufacturing strategy, is unrelated to any ideological commitments.
BARILLA DOESN’T USE ANIMALS TO TEST ITS PRODUCTS AND RAW MATERIALS
At Barilla we do not test our products or raw materials on animals, nor do we fund, commission, co-author or otherwise support it, either directly or through third parties. We insist that our suppliers use alternatives to animal testing methods. An exception would only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes, and even in this instance, Barilla will make every effort to identify and propose a non-animal alternative which could fulfill the regulatory requirement, if possible. In order to assess the safety and quality of our products, we use a very broad range of methodologies, which do not include any type of animal testing.
