Nutrition

We want to bring high quality products that combine excellent flavour with a balanced nutritional profile, thus promoting the dissemination of healthy and sustainable diets. This led us to the Better Nutrition project in 2009.

In 2019 we reviewed 35 products with the aim of reducing the salt, fat, saturated fat or sugar content.
In addition, we increased the fibre content and extended the wholegrain range and the range of products made with legumes.

In 2019, we launched 22 products with a better nutritional profile, in line with the Nutritional Guidelines and inspired by the Mediterranean Diet model.

Over the years, we have defined Barilla Nutritional Guidelines: a set of rules and principles designed to guide the continuous improvement of products and the launch of new recipes that promote people's wellbeing, through healthy lifestyles and correct nutrition, updated in 2018.

Quality and safety

We work daily to offer people excellent products in terms of quality and food safety. To this end, we have introduced the food quality and safety system, to analyse and assess all possible risks and define the necessary measures for their prevention and management.

During 2019 we carried out over 4 million analysis along all the phases of the production process: the selection of the raw materials, the production, up to the final distribution at the point of sale.

We work to identify and monitor potential emerging risks: risks monitored by the scientific community and not yet regulated by law. In 2019, approximately 2,500 monitoring analysis were carried out by Barilla on the main emerging risks in the food sector.

Quality and safety

The protection of food safety also materializes in the promotion of initiatives aimed at combating food fraud. With this in mind, we have included a structured system for the prevention and management of frauds to identify any vulnerabilities along the supply chain and to plan management actions.

Food education

We believe in the importance of developing and disseminating education and information for new generations and employees, through which to promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles, correct food habits and responsible consumption of food.

Food education

One of the main projects promoted during the year was Giocampus, a project run as an educational alliance between the public and private sectors, dedicated to the wellbeing of future generations. In 2019, over 18,000 children between 5 and 14 were involved in activities dedicated to food and physical education, and healthier lifestyles.

The sì.mediterraneo project, resulting from a collaboration between Barilla and the department of clinical and experimental medicine of the University of Naples Federico II, with the additional contribution of the Barilla Health & Wellness Advisory Board, aims to increase the awareness among employees of the benefits of a Mediterranean Diet and to improve their dietary habits every day.

Food education

Vivismart is based on an alliance between Barilla, Coop Italy, Danone Italia and the respective foundations, and is the first project of its kind aimed at promoting “smart” lifestyles  characterised by informed nutritional choices and aligned with the Mediterranean Diet and the Double Pyramid model.
