We care about the world we live in and we are committed to play a role in reducing our impact on the planet. For this reason, we constantly work to improve the efficiency of the production processes, reducing the environmental impact in terms of CO2eq emissions and water consumption, and to promote farming and livestock breeding practices with a lower impact for all our supply chains.

Sustainable sourcing

We believe that what makes our products good is also the care and attention we put everyday on improving and innovating our processes to reduce our impact on the planet. And these are our results of goodness:

We put special care on our raw materials

Durum Wheat

We have developed Guidelines and tools to support more than 8,000 farmers in obtaining a better quality of durum wheat for our pasta, while having a lower impact on the planet.


Thanks to the Mulino Charter and the Harrys Charter, we promote the sustainable cultivation of soft wheat, including more than 2,000 farms so far.


100% of the purchases come from the countries where the tomatoes are processed and transformed into sauces.


Mainly sourced by suppliers located nearby the Rubbiano (close to Parma) plant, to minimize the time between the harvesting and processing


99% of cocoa is purchased supporting the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, committed to improving the living conditions of growers’ communities in Africa.

Vegetable oils

We use sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and soybean oil. As regards sunflower oil, its production is promoted in rotation with durum wheat.

The Science-Based Targets

Science-Based Targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are defined in line with the decarburization level required to keep the increase of global temperatures below 1.5°C, as
defined in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and included in the Paris Climate Agreement (COP21).

The SBT initiative stems from the collaboration of Carbon Disclosure Project, United Nations Global Compact, World Resource Institute and WWF, with the aim to guide companies in defining ambitious objectives for the mitigation of climate change, to guarantee that their Climate Action is in line with scientific objectives.

In 2019, Barilla submitted its own reduction objectives:

• 25% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 2017);

• 26% reduction of Scope 3 absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, per tonne of finished product (compared to 2017).

The external validation Group confirmed that Barilla’s objectives are in line with the commitment required for a 2°C reduction.
