Responsible supply chains

We seek excellent ingredients for our recipes, ensuring high quality and guaranteeing responsible production that is attentive to the Planet’s resources.
The rights of people who operate in the supply chains and the impacts of production on the environment and the wellbeing of animals, are fundamental criteria we consider in our purchasing decisions.

Responsible supply chains

Over the years, we have developed the Sustainable Agriculture Project, which promotes the development of responsible farming practices in economic, environmental and social terms, increasing the percentage of responsibly purchased raw materials every year to 46% in 2018.

Responsible supply chains

In order to guarantee the consistently excellent quality of durum wheat and promote the growth of its producers, we provide tools to make the agricultural practices more efficient and sustainable: the Decalogue for the Sustainable Cultivation of Quality Durum Wheat and the granoduro.net® platform.

Responsible supply chains

In order to improve the sustainability of the products, we measure their environmental impacts throughout their life cycle by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. 71% of volumes produced are currently covered by the lca analysis.

In 2012, we launched a process to gradually stop using eggs from cage-reared hens and move to buying eggs from producers who rear free-range hens. In 2018, 94% of eggs purchased came from cage-free hens.

Animal welfare

In accordance with its animal welfare policy, the group buys 100% of its pork and beef from producers who respect the Barilla Animal Welfare Guidelines.

In 2018, Barilla was confirmed as the Italian leader in animal welfare according to the BBFAW (Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare) publication.
